Rapper and self-proclaimed gaming entrepreneur Soulja Boy is back in the console business, and once again, things are looking a little… too familiar. His latest device, the SouljaGame Flip, has drawn immediate comparisons to (and accusations from) Retroid, the company behind the popular Retroid Pocket Flip 2 handheld.
Fans quickly noticed that Soulja’s new system is nearly identical to Retroid’s in every possible way — from the 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display to the Snapdragon 865 processor and 8GB of RAM. Even the design looks one-to-one, with only minor branding differences. Originally listed at over $400, Soulja has since dropped the price to $200, conveniently the same as Retroid’s own model.
Retroid didn’t mince words when speaking to RetroDodo, stating that Soulja Boy “does not have permission to rebrand our products and sell them as his own.” The company is now making it clear that the SouljaGame Flip is not an officially licensed product.
If this story sounds familiar, that’s because it is. Back in 2018, Soulja Boy launched a similar line of “SouljaGame” consoles that were later pulled from sale after Nintendo reportedly threatened legal action over copyright concerns.
Despite past controversies and widespread criticism, Soulja Boy remains committed to his retro gaming venture — but with Retroid now publicly calling him out, the future of the SouljaGame Flip already looks shaky.
Just another day in the ongoing saga of Soulja Boy vs. the gaming world.
