Fallout's roots can be traced back to the GURPS tabletop system before it adopted the SPECIAL mechanics we know today. GURPS included a variety of unique character traits, some of which were quite bizarre, like a fear of cows or heights that affected gameplay. While GURPS had its quirks, switching to SPECIAL made the game more streamlined and accessible. This evolution shows how a possible misstep turned into a hallmark of a classic RPG.
