Sid Meier recently shared some intriguing details about the early days of the Civilization series. Initially, he and Bruce Shelley contemplated making a real-time strategy game, much like Age of Empires. However, they chose a turn-based format to make the game more accessible for players. Early prototypes even experimented with a hexagonal grid, but they ultimately went with a square grid for simplicity.
