Nintendo Blocks Foreign Payments on Japanese eShop, Limits Imports

Starting January 25, 2025, Nintendo will no longer accept foreign credit cards or PayPal accounts on the Japanese eShop, a move aimed at reducing fraudulent transactions. This change will make it more difficult for international users to access Japan-exclusive digital games like Mother 3 and Yo-Kai Watch remakes. However, this restriction only affects the Japanese eShop; American and European eShops remain unaffected, and physical Japanese game cartridges are still compatible with the Nintendo Switch. The announcement comes ahead of Nintendo’s planned reveal of the next-gen Switch, expected in April.
